JE scare: Odisha Health Min puts Malkangiri children deaths at 93

The combined death toll due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and non-JE in Odisha’s Malkangiri district till date stands at 93, informed Health and Family Welfare Minister Pradip Amat here today.

Giving a break-up of the combined death toll after a review meeting here on child deaths in Malkangiri Amat said that while 32 of the deaths were due to JE, the remaining 61 were due to non-JE.

“32 of the deaths are due to JE and the remaining 61 deaths are due to non-JE. The situation is under control,” said Amat.

He said currently, 17 children were undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital in Malkangiri.

Out of them, six were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while 11 were undergoing treatment in the Encephalitis ward, he added.

The Health Minister said that 180 villages in seven blocks of the district were affected with the vector-borne disease.

Stating that the state government has distributed 15,000 Insecticide Treated Mosquito Nets (ITMN) Amat pointed out that the ITMN to be provided by the Centre was yet to reach the state.

He informed that vaccination against JE would begin in Malkangiri district by December.

Notably, the death toll due to JE in the district according to unofficial sources stands at 111.
