JE toll in Odisha’s Malkangiri mounts to 115

Japanese Encephalitis (JE) claimed lives of four more children in Odisha’s Malkangiri district today taking the death toll in the vector-borne disease to 115 in 69 days in the district.

The deceased were identified as Sidharth Beti of Kataguda, Sibani Padiami of Potrel village under Korukonda block, Sahadeb Padiami of Simagudi and Kasturi Hantala of Chitapalichari area in the district.

All of them succumbed to the disease while undergoing treatment at the ICU of the District Headquarters Hospital, sources said.

However, Health and Family Welfare Minister Pradip Amat had yesterday said that the combined death toll due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and non-JE in Odisha’s Malkangiri district stands at 93.

Giving a break-up of the combined death toll after a review meeting on child deaths in Malkangiri, Amat said that while 32 of the deaths were due to JE, the remaining 61 were due to non-JE.

He informed that vaccination against JE would begin in Malkangiri district by December.
