Sundargarh: A miscreant reportedly broke into a jewellery showroom and decamped with valuables worth lakhs in Rajgangpur in Odisha's Sundargarh district in the wee hours on Tuesday. The showroom belonged to BJP mandal president Bholaram Soni and was located on the main road in Rajgangpur town. While the number of accused have not been established yet nor has any arrest been made so far, one of them was caught on camera committing the crime.
As per reports, the accused broke into the shop from the roof by removing a portion of asbestos sheet and decamped with gold and silver ornaments worth lakhs. Preliminary investigation revealed that he tried to break the locker but was unable to do so and hence, could not pull off a major heist.
The crime came to light after the shop staff opened the showroom in the morning. They immediately informed the police who started an investigation. Later, CCTV footage showed the accused entering the shop from the roof and then decamping with the jewellery.
Sources said the last few days were witnessing a rise in theft crimes in the area. Four days back, miscreants looted Rs 50,000 cash and jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh from the house of a DCBL official.
Police said a case has been registered and further investigation is underway. The accused will be apprehended very soon, they said.
