July air passenger traffic up 29 percent; SpiceJet leads the pack

New Delhi, Aug 18:

Domestic air passenger traffic increased by 29 percent during July to 67.45 lakh with SpiceJet leading the pack with 93.4 percent capacity utilisation, official data showed on Tuesday.

Spicejet-aircraftThe domestic passenger traffic during the corresponding month of last year stood at 52.16 lakh.

The data furnished by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) showed that the passenger traffic during January-July period grew by 21.13 percent.

“Passengers carried by domestic airlines during Jan-Jul 2015 were 455.78 lakh as against 376.28 lakh during the corresponding period of previous year thereby registering a growth of 21.13 percent,” the DGCA said in its statistical analysis for the last month.

During June, passenger traffic had risen by 16.03 percent to 66.01 lakh from 56.89 lakh in the corresponding month last year.

The exponential rise in India’s passenger traffic had prompted even the international aviation body International Air Transport Association (IATA) to state that the improved air connectivity would make a major contribution to the government’s efforts to make it easier to do business in India.

“For that, we need a policy framework that reduces onerous taxes and regulation and that continues to improve infrastructure and cost efficiency,” Tony Tyler, director general and chief executive of IATA had said.

The DGCA data further showed that low cost carrier (LCC) SpiceJet had the highest passenger load factor during the month under review at 93.4 percent.

The LCC was followed by Air Costa (81.7), GoAir (81.2), Jet Airways (81), AirAsia India (80.2), JetLite (80.1), IndiGo (78.4), Air India’s domestic operations (77.8), Air Pegasus (71.5) and Vistara (60.3).

At the same time, data on the on-time performance showed Vistara leading the industry with 93.5 percent punctuality at four major airports of Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

It was followed by IndiGo (86.6), Jet Airways and JetLite (80.4), Air India’s domestic operations (73.4) and SpiceJet (63.8) being on schedule.

Meanwhile, Air Costa had the highest numbers of cancellations at 4.67 percent followed by Air Pegasus (2.50), Air India’s domestic operations (1.12), Jet Airways (0.52), SpiceJet (0.49), GoAir (0.46), Vistara (0.37) AirAsia India (0.30), JetLite (0.22) and IndiGo (0.11).

“The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for the month of July 2015 has been 0.53 percent,” the aviation regulator said in a statement.

According to the data, Air Pegasus had the highest complaints rate per 10,000 passengers in the month under review at 3.6 percent.

The regional airline was followed by SpiceJet and Air India’s domestic operations both had (1.12) rate respectively. They were followed by Jet Airways and JetLite (1.4), GoAir (1.3), AirAsia India (1.2), IndiGo (0.8), Air Costa (0.6) and Vistara (0.2).

LCC IndiGo achieved the highest market share at 35.8 percent followed by Jet Airways (19.8), Air India (16.2), SpiceJet (12.3), GoAir (8.4) and JetLite (3 percent).

AirAsia India had a market penetration of 1.9 percent, Vistara reported a market share of 1.4 percent, followed by Air Costa’s (1.00) and Air Pegasus (0.2). (IANS)
