Kalyana Vrata is one of the eight maha vratas mentioned in the Skanda Purana. It is observed on the Uttara Nakshatra during the Shukla Paksha in the Tamil month of Phalguni.

Kalyana Vrata is also celebrated as the festival of Panguni Uthiram. On this day, devotees assemble at Lord Murugan temples in large numbers.

The divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is conducted at many temples on this occasion.

Tithi Begins: March 18, 2022 12:34 AM.

Tithi Ends: March 19, 2022 12:18 AM.

Rituals: The vrat observer wakes up early in the morning, takes bath and meditates about Lord Shiva in the wedding posture with Goddess Parvati.

Metallic idol of the God and the Goddesses is worshipped with sacred substances. Devotees decorate the idols with jewellery and flowers before observing the marriage between Lord Shiva and his consort.

The prasad is distributed among the devotees of Lord Shiva and their spouses.

The vrat observer visits nearby Shiva temple and seeks blessings of the deity. They prostrate and circumambulate thrice in front of the Lord.

After observing fast all day, they can eat prasad in the form of sweet Payasam and fruits together with other devotees. Only one meal can be eaten by the devotees on that day.

One who observes Kalyana Vrata should sleep on the dharbari grass.

Next day, the vrat observer donates the idol to another devotee of Lord Shiva.
