Khandagiri Mela in Odisha capital from tomorrow; Jatra troupes told to avoid vulgar content

Bhubaneswar: The famous Khandagiri Mela in Odisha capital here is all set to kick off on February 16 (Friday).

The annual fair, popularly known as Khandagiri Kumbha Mela, at the twin hills of Khandagiri and Udaygiri will continue till February 25.

However, Odia Jatra (opera) troupes, said to be the main attraction of the fair, will start staging plays from February 18, sources said.

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), meanwhile, asked the Jatra troupes to refrain from using indecent and objectionable contents while staging their plays. The troupes have been asked not to perform any vulgar dance during their plays, sources said.

At least 13 opera troupes will stage their plays at this year’s Magha Mela at Khandagiri. Popular opera troupes Saisamrat, Gouri, Suryamandir, Durgamandir, Shivani, Ashok Samrat, Swarna Mahal, Konark, Swarna Mandir, Kalinga and Tulasi are scheduled to stage their plays at this year’s Khandagiri Kumbha Mela, sources added.

This year, altogether 360 stalls will come up at the fairground. The civic authorities have already given the required approval in this regard.

The BMC has made all arrangements including lighting, sanitation facility, parking lots and provision of drinking water for the mega carnival. The stall owners have been asked to adhere to the BMC guidelines for disposal of their garbage, said an official.

The fair will showcase Odisha’s crafts, cuisines and traditions before the visitors, he added.
