In a chilling reminder of the accident in which a Haiwa mowed down three persons at the same spot on December 1 last year, another speeding Haiwa rammed into a car (WB 02 AA-6900) at Khandagiri Square here, killing three persons and injuring one late on Sunday night.
The Haiwa, which was coming from the Baramunda side, sped off after running head on to the car coming from the opposite side and converting it into a mass of mangled metal in a matter of seconds.
Two of the four occupants of the car died on the spot while a third person died at the Capital Hospital, Khandagiri police sources said.
The three deceased were identified as Praveen Kumar Sadangi, Sourabh Ranjan Patnaik, both from Nuapada and Subham Jyoti Khamari of Balangir, all are B Tech students.
Abhas Padhy, a B Tech student who was seriously hurt in the accident, is fighting for his life at the hospital, they said.
Sanjit Choudhary of Haryana, at present staying at Jagamara here, who was driving the car, escaped unhurt. He was pursuing his Law at KIIT University. The Khandagiri police said they have detained the driver of the car.
Sanjit was arrested for drunken driving and will be forwarded him to the local court for the cause.
The driver along with Haiwa was still at large after the accident, police said.
