A local court in Vishakhapatnam had on June 28 allowed the Commissionerate Police to take Babu on transit remand to Cuttack.

Sources said Babu will be produced before the SDJM court in Cuttack tonight and Commissionerate Police will seek his remand for interrogation tomorrow.

Twin city Commissioner of Police RP Sharma said prima facie Babu’s complicity has been established in the case as the hospital had not sought  an NOC from the Odisha government, which is mandatory as per provisions of the law in case an organ transplant takes place outside the state .

He said, moreover, the hospital authorities had not verified the marriage certificate of the donor and recipient who had claimed to be wife and husband.

The police had on June 1 taken up the case of Namita Nayak of Mangalabag, Cuttack , who had allegedly sold her kidney to Mohan Chandra Lenka of Bhubaneswar against a promise of Rs 10 lakh.

During the course of the investigation, police came to know that all documents were forged as the donor and the recipient were unrelated and that the transplant was performed at the Seven Hills Hospital on April 3 on the basis of forged documents.

Later, a special team of the Commissionerate Police went to Vishakhapatnam and arrested Babu on June 16.

However, the team had failed to get him to Cuttack as he was admitted to a private hospital after reportedly falling ill.
