Kunduli gang rape and suicide: HC directs Odisha govt to form SIT

Cuttack: The Orissa High Court today directed the State government to form a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the sensational Kunduli gang rape and suicide case.

The SIT will comprise of three Odisha police officers of DIG rank, informed the victim’s advocate Shrijee Bhavsar.

Chief Justice of the Orissa HC KS Jhaveri passed the directive after hearing arguments from both the sides. “The court-monitored SIT will carry out a thorough investigation into the matter and documents submitted by us,” added Bhavsar.

The court has fixed the next date of hearing to December 16. The State Crime branch had submitted the closure report of this case in the HC, said the advocate.

On the other hand, the victim’s mother has been demanding a CBI probe into the case.

Worth mentioning, the HC had earlier on August 3 stated that it would constitute a three-member SIT for an investigation into the case.

The minor girl from Kunduli in Koraput district had alleged that she was raped by some unknown security personnel on October 10, 2017. Later she committed suicide on January 22, 2018.

After demands from different quarters, the State government had ordered a separate Crime Branch probe and judicial inquiry into the case.
