Labs to come up in 100 Odisha schools to popularize science

Bhubaneswar: Odisha government today decided to provide Rs 10 lakh each to 100 schools across the state for opening modern laboratories to popularize higher learning and research in science among students.

The decision was taken at the first Governing Council meeting of the State Science & Technology Council chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here today.

It was decided at the meeting to provide necessary support and training to students to encourage them to undertake higher learning and research in science.

It was also decided to conduct various science-based programmes at school and college level.

“Especially the Council will provide help and support to students for undertaking higher learning and research. Presently, arrangements have been made to provide Rs 10 lakh each to 100 schools to open school science laboratories. To popularize science in various spheres, to create interest among people towards science funds will be provided for opening laboratories in schools and colleges,” said Minister Science and Technology Badri Narayan Patra to reporters after the meeting.

“The aim is to create basic awareness among children so that they take up science as a career after Plus II. That was the main discussion on how we can encourage them through scholarships, competitive exams and providing them with training etc,” explained Vir Vikram Yadav, Secretary Science & Technology Department.

The governing council passed a resolution to implement the New Biotechnology Policy -2016.

The meeting stressed for extensive use of technology for making available good governance to men in the lowest rung of the society.
