Nabarangpur: Days after a nursing student attempted suicide by consuming poison after a jilted lover leaked her private photos and videos online, police have arrested two persons including her male friend in this connection.
The victim, who was rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar after her condition did not improve, is critical and now battling for life. She was shifted to the premier health institute after the incident came to light, following a fresh police complaint by her family on Tuesday.
The arrested individuals included the main accused Satyajit Sarkar and the girl's male friend Uddharba Gadanayak. While police intensified investigation immediately and nabbed Satyajit from a moving bus in Daspalla through mobile tracking, Uddharba was held from Jeypore. The duo was arrested in connection with alleged harassment and leaking intimate pictures of the girl which led to the suicide bid.
Initial investigation revealed that Uddharba was the victim's former partner while Satyajit leaked her photos after his one-sided love for the girl went unrequited.
As per reports, the girl, a resident of Raighar in Nabarangpur district was pursuing her second year BSc Nursing degree in Jeypore and staying in a hostel. Satyajit, who hailed from a neighbouring area and was pursuing BSc Agriculture in a different college, had harboured feelings for her and was pursuing the girl obsessively. However, the one-sided romantic pursuit took an ugly turn when Satyajit assaulted the girl in a marketplace in Jeypore on July 13. Sustaining facial injuries, the girl had reported the matter to police. While the case was settled informally and the accused released on bail two days later, the fallout provoked Satyajit to seek revenge. Driven by anger and bruised feelings, he leaked some unseen private photos and videos of the girl, allegedly shared by Uddharba, on social media.
When the pictures became viral online, the girl, overwhelmed by the fear of public shame, took a drastic step and consumed weedicide to end her life. She was rushed to Umerkote hospital and later to Raipur in Chhattisgarh but had to return home when her condition did not improve.
On Tuesday, the matter was highlighted after her kin approached the police again, prompting the district administration to act swifty and shift her to AIIMS in Bhubaneswar as her health was deteriorating.
Meanwhile, police, after recording statement of the victim, intensified the probe and arrested the two accused individuals in coordinated raids across districts. Official sources said the youths have been booked under relevant charges of the IPC and IT Act. The condition of the girl is still critical as she battles a multi-organ failure, they added.
