New Delhi: In a major push to enhance railway infrastructure in Odisha, the Ministry of Railways approved the construction of a fourth line between Ranital Link Cabin and Bhadrak station (5.06 km) at an estimated cost of ₹149.32 crore.

This key project is expected to significantly increase the capacity and efficiency of train operations along the Howrah–Chennai mainline, while improving freight connectivity to Dhamra and Paradeep ports. The Ranital Link Cabin–Bhadrak section forms part of the Howrah–Chennai High-Density Network (HDN), one of India’s busiest railway corridors.

The addition of a fourth line will help decongest the corridor by diverting port-bound freight traffic from the mainline. This will ensure faster and more punctual operations for both passenger and Mail/Express trains, and facilitate smoother movement of coaching trains between Kharagpur and Bhubaneswar, and beyond.

Currently, the section faces heavy congestion, leading to frequent train delays. Once the project is completed, operational bottlenecks will be eased, enabling a more reliable and timely train schedule for passengers.

The project will also enable better segregation of freight and coaching traffic, minimising delays and improving overall route efficiency. With enhanced line capacity, the network will be better equipped to handle increasing traffic volumes in the region.

This initiative is part of the East Coast Railway’s ongoing efforts to modernise its infrastructure and develop a world-class rail network for the people of Odisha.
