Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of BJD workers today gheraoed RDC offices in Cuttack, Berhampur, and Sambalpur, demanding a judicial investigation into the death of Soumyashree Bisi, the 20-year-old student of Fakir Mohan (FM) Autonomous College in Balasore, who had attempted self-immolation over alleged harassment and later succumbed to burn injuries at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
Led by party leaders, the BJD workers staged a protest near the offices and resorted to sloganeering to press their demands.
The party leaders also addressed the workers during the agitation.
"The people have extended support to us voluntarily as we are gheraoing the RDC office today. Women are not safe in the state today. Crimes against women have increased. We demand that a judicial probe be ordered into the FM College student death incident, or else we will intensify our agitation in the coming days and gherao the Assembly," said senior BJD leader Sanjay Kumar Das Burma while speaking to reporters during the protest in Berhampur.
Earlier on July 16, the BJD workers had tried to gherao the Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar by breaking the barricades erected on the Lower PMG road. An intense scuffle ensued between the cops and the BJD workers during the incident.
