Bhubaneswar: With ban of sale of petrol and diesel in plastic bottles in Odisha, consumers will no longer be allowed to purchase fuel in plastic containers at any petrol pump in the state from today.

The decision comes in the aftermath of two disturbing incidents—the self-immolation attempt by a student of FM College in Balasore and the horrific case in Balanga, Puri district, where a 15-year-old girl was set on fire by three miscreants using a flammable substance.

In response, the Odisha government on Monday officially imposed a ban on the sale of fuel in plastic bottles. Petrol pumps have been instructed not to provide petrol or diesel to individuals carrying plastic containers.

Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra directed all oil marketing associations to strictly adhere to the ban. District Collectors have also been asked to ensure rigorous enforcement of the order in their respective areas.

The Minister further warned of stern action against individuals or shops found selling petrol illegally by the roadside or through unauthorized outlets.

The state government's move aims to curb the easy availability of fuel for misuse and enhance public safety.
