Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government banned the sale of petrol and diesel in plastic bottles or containers at fuel refilling stations across the state.

The decision was announced following a meeting between Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra and Utkal Petrol Dealers’ Association General Secretary Sanjay Lath.

Minister Patra stated while fuel cannot be dispensed in plastic containers, individuals may still collect petrol or diesel in glass containers at refilling stations.

To ensure strict enforcement of the ban, directives will be issued to all District Collectors, the Minister said.

Additionally, action will be taken against those illegally selling fuel on roadsides without valid license. Raids will be conducted to implement the new rules effectively, he added.

The move comes in the wake of a recent self-immolation incident involving a woman in Balasore, which drew attention to the easy accessibility of fuel.
