Bhubaneswar: The health condition of Soumyashree Bisi, the Fakir Mohan (FM) Autonomous College student who attempted self-immolation on campus, continues to remain critical, with doctors at AIIMS Bhubaneswar saying that the next 72 hours will be crucial for her.

“Her health condition remains critical, similar to yesterday. There’s no significant improvement. The next 72 hours are crucial,” said Dr Dilip Parida, Superintendent of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, today.

Dr Parida added that a team of medical experts is closely monitoring her progress. “Fluid replacement is ongoing, and we are in constant touch with AIIMS Delhi for guidance. Her blood pressure is being maintained, but she has developed a slight fever. Dialysis may be conducted today, if needed. We are doing our best to provide her with the highest level of care,” he said.

Hospital sources revealed that Soumyashree has suffered 90 to 95 per cent burn injuries, many of which have caused severe internal damage. Her kidneys and respiratory system have been significantly affected. She is currently on 98% oxygen support, and her potassium levels have dropped. Doctors are also monitoring her sugar levels and other vital parameters, as she has stopped urinating due to kidney damage.

Soumyashree, a second-year integrated BEd student at Fakir Mohan (FM) Autonomous College in Balasore, attempted self-immolation by setting herself on fire after pouring petrol on herself on the college premises.

Before the extreme act, Soumyashree had been staging a protest near the college campus, demanding action against the Head of the Department, Samir Sahu, for allegedly misbehaving with her. Despite her filing a formal complaint, she was reportedly distressed over the inaction by the college authorities.

Sahadevkhunta Police have arrested Sahu and initiated an investigation into the allegations and the circumstances leading to the incident.
