Deogarh: In a shocking incident, a man surrendered before police after killing a fellow villager and locking up the body in his house in Barkote tehsil of Odisha's Deogarh on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Ratan Pradhan and the accused Panchanana Suhula, both around 50 years of age and belonging to Nuagaon village. Ratan's body was found with his throat slit in Panchanana's house.
The incident came to light after the accused confessed to the crime soon after committing it.
As per reports, two persons from the village - Sapneshwar Dehury and Sunil Bhanja - were creating a ruckus in front of Panchanana's house late in the night after a fallout over poultry theft. Around that time, Ratan went to meet Panchanana where the latter attacked him and slit his throat. Panchanana then locked his house and went straight to the police station to surrender. Police said the accused in his statement claimed that Ratan was sent by his wife's paramour to kill him. But Panchanana turned the tables and killed Ratan instead in a revenge bid.
Both Dehury and Bhanja, however, claimed that they were not aware of what transpired inside Panchanana's house. Meanwhile, irate locals including family members of the deceased gathered and started vandalising Panchanana's house where the body was kept. Alleging human sacrifice, the agitated villagers struck portions of the house with sticks.
Meanwhile, Police reached the spot and tried to placate the villagers. Addressing mediapersons, Deogarh SDPO Ramesh Mahana informed that the exact turn of events will be ascertained after a scientific team arrives from Angul. A case has been registered and further details will be shared soon, he added.
