Bhubaneswar: Chaotic scenes unfolded following a violent clash between inmates of two hostels on the campus of Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar (BJB) Autonomous College in Bhubaneswar late on Wednesday night.
The fallout was triggered over opposition to volleyball game in the hostel vicinity.
As per reports, inmates of Ashoka Boys Hostel were playing a volleyball game on the college playground in the evening when the ball accidentally hit one student in Ambedkar Hostel. When the latter confronted the team, the boys threatened and assaulted him. While the issue was temporarily subdued, it flared up later in the night when the injured student narrated the ordeal to his hostel mates. On getting to know about the incident, boys from the Ambedkar hostel planned to seek revenge and after dinner, got into a heated argument with the Ashoka hostel students.
The spat got uglier when the group of boys from Ambedkar hostel attacked one of the rival gang members who had threatened their inmate, with an iron rod inflicting injury on his head.
As the dispute escalated, more students from Ashoka hostel teamed up and marched towards the opposing group with sticks.
However, the conflict was prevented from snowballing further after the hostel authorities reached out to Badagada police.
On being alerted, cops from the police station reached the spot immediately and took control of the situation. The clashing youths demanded suspension of the opposing party and demanded scanning of CCTV footage. The matter was finally brought under control after the boys were placated by the security personnel.
