Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased Odisha’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage by gifting a handcrafted Silver Filigree Clutch Purse to Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, during his visit to the G7 Summit in Canada.
The Silver Filigree, locally known as Tarakasi, is a hallmark of the 500-year-old silver filigree craftsmanship from Cuttack, Odisha. Crafted entirely by hand, the purse features intricate lace-like patterns formed using extremely fine strands of silver wire. This traditional art form, deeply rooted in temple artistic styles, once flourished under royal patronage and remains a symbol of Odisha’s artisanal excellence.
In another cultural exchange during the summit, Prime Minister Modi also presented a sandstone replica of the iconic Konark Wheel to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The replica, inspired by the 13th-century Sun Temple in Odisha, is a masterfully carved tribute to Indian architecture and symbolism. Made from natural sandstone, it mirrors the Konark Wheel's 24 spokes, representing the cycle of time and the rhythm of life. Adorned with depictions of dancers, deities, and floral motifs, the gift showcased the depth and detail of Odisha’s sculptural traditions.
Through these symbolic gifts, PM Modi highlighted the cultural richness and craftsmanship of Odisha on a prestigious international platform.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also gifted a traditional Pattachitra painting to the President of Croatia, highlighting the timeless artistry of Odisha. Originating from the heritage village of Raghurajpur in Puri district, this intricate art form beautifully captures the divine essence of Lord Jagannath and the spirit of Odia culture.
