Cuttack: President Droupadi Murmu today attended the convocation ceremony of Ravenshaw University in Cuttack and lauded the institution's rich legacy and continued contribution to education, research, and social empowerment.

In her address, President Murmu highlighted Ravenshaw’s historical role as a hub of India’s freedom struggle and its association with the movement for Odisha's statehood. She said the university has consistently played a significant role in promoting education and women’s empowerment.

"Many alumni of this university have brought pride to the nation as freedom fighters, scholars, thinkers, political leaders, scientists and artists," she noted.

Applauding Ravenshaw University’s progress in research and innovation, the President said it was commendable that the institution was extending its expertise through consultancy and technology transfers to various industries. She especially appreciated the initiatives undertaken by its ‘Centre of Design, Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ to encourage ideation, translational research, and startups.

President Murmu also acknowledged the university’s efforts to improve access to education for students from tribal communities, underprivileged backgrounds, and persons with disabilities. She stressed the importance of inclusive education in building a strong and equitable society.

Describing the current era as one shaped by technological advancements, she said tools such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, 3D Printing, and Cloud Computing are changing how people think and work. While appreciating the university's adoption of these technologies, she urged caution against their misuse.

“Our country is passing through Amrit Kaal — a defining period. Making India a developed nation by 2047 is our collective goal. This requires a strong sense of 'Nation First',” she said, encouraging students to follow the example of India’s soldiers, scientists, farmers, engineers, and doctors. She called upon them to contribute to nation-building with knowledge, skills and dedication.

Later in the day, the President laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of three buildings at Ravenshaw Girls' High School in Cuttack. She emphasised the need for quality education and good infrastructure, expressing hope that the upgraded facilities would enhance the learning environment for students.

During her speech, President Murmu praised the Central and State governments for prioritising girls’ education through such projects. She pointed out that in many convocations she attended, girl students often outperformed others when given equal opportunities.

“Today, women are making their mark in every sphere — from literature and education to science, commerce and technology,” she said, urging young girls to draw inspiration from successful women leaders and aim high with confidence and determination.
