Puri: Tension gripped Balanga in Odisha’s Puri district today as Biju Janata Dal (BJD) workers staged a protest outside the local police station, demanding justice for a minor girl who was allegedly set ablaze by unidentified miscreants in the area.
The protest turned chaotic when a group of agitated BJD workers attempted to force their way into the Balanga police station, resulting in a scuffle with police personnel. To bring the situation under control, three platoons of police forces were deployed.
The party workers also demanded the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, holding her accountable for the deteriorating law and order situation and alleged police inaction in the case.
Pipili SDPO Debashish Mishra said the investigation is in progress, and police are examining CCTV footage to identify the culprits. He added that eight persons, including relatives and friends of the minor girl, have been questioned. However, no arrests have been made so far.
Meanwhile, the victim was today airlifted to AIIMS Delhi for better treatment.
The shocking incident occurred on July 19 in the Balanga area, where the minor girl had reportedly gone to meet a friend. She was allegedly attacked by three unidentified youths, who poured an inflammable substance on her and set her ablaze before fleeing the spot.
Locals rushed to the girl's rescue and initially admitted her to the Community health centre in Pipili. She was later shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar due to the severity of her injuries.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar had formed an expert committee to monitor and manage her treatment. However, given the critical nature of her condition, a decision was taken to move her to AIIMS Delhi.
An investigation by police is underway to identify and nab the attackers.
