Bhubaneswar: Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida strongly criticized the US travel advisory cautioning its citizens against visiting several Indian regions, including Odisha.
Speaking to newsmen in Bhubaneswar today, Parida remarked, “The number of American tourists visiting Odisha is negligible. In fact, not a single tourist from the US has visited the state in the last three days.”
Reacting to the advisory, she said, “It appears that the US President sees India’s rapid development across various sectors as a threat. That’s possibly why such an advisory has been issued, citing increased risks in some Indian states. But I do not feel Odisha or any other state in India are in such a situation that tourists need permission from their country to visit here."
She further stated, “India, and Odisha in particular, remain safe under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mohan Majhi respectively. While US citizens must follow their government's instructions, here, we are focused on ensuring the safety and development of our people.”
Addressing concerns about the recent gang-rape incident in Gopalpur, the Deputy CM highlighted swift police action.
“All accused were arrested within hours. The law is being enforced strictly, and we are exploring steps to enhance security at popular tourist and lovers' spots across the state,” she said.
The BJP-led government in Odisha has come under scrutiny following the US Department of State continued Level 2 travel advisory for India. The advisory urges American citizens to “exercise increased caution” due to risks related to crime and terrorism.
The State Department also warns specifically against traveling alone — especially for women — and highlights violent crimes, including sexual assaults. Areas mentioned in the advisory span from eastern Maharashtra and northern Telangana to western West Bengal, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Meghalaya, and Odisha, where Maoist activity remains a concern.
