Nayagarh: In a dramatic turn of events, a young woman consumed poison on the premises of the Itamati police station in Odisha’s Nayagarh district today, allegedly in protest against inaction on her complaint.

The woman had filed a police complaint yesterday against a youth with whom she had been in a relationship. Her complaint came as a counter-allegation after the youth’s family lodged an FIR at the same police station, accusing her brother of forcibly entering their house and issuing threats.

Earlier in February, the woman had also filed a rape complaint against the same youth, leading to his immediate arrest. He was remanded to judicial custody and released on bail after 15 days. Since then, tensions between the two families have escalated.

According to police sources, while officers were discussing her latest complaint with her at the station, the woman briefly stepped out of the room. Minutes later, she returned and informed them that she had consumed poison as her complaint was not addressed.

She was immediately rushed to the Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital, where her condition is reported to be stable.

Her mother, who accompanied her to the police station, alleged officials downplayed her daughter’s complaint, citing CCTV footage from the youth’s house that reportedly confirmed the claims made by his family regarding the brother’s intrusion and threats.

Police officials stated an investigation into the matter is ongoing.
