Berhampur: In a shocking case of domestic violence, a young woman was allegedly set on fire by her mother-in-law and brother-in-law over dowry demands in Khallikote area of Odisha’s Ganjam district, today.

The victim, identified as Arati, was admitted to Khallikote Hospital in a half-burnt condition. Doctors later referred her to the MKCG Hospital in Berhampur as she had sustained 40 per cent burn injuries.

According to reports, the incident took place in Kahneipura village under Khallikote police limits. Arati had married Akash Parida two years ago. However, her in-laws had allegedly been torturing her repeatedly over dowry demands.

A heated argument reportedly broke out between Arati and her mother-in-law last night. This morning, her mother-in-law and brother-in-law, identified as Prakash, allegedly poured petrol on her and set her on fire.

Following the incident, police reached the hospital and have started an investigation into the matter.
