Lawyers-cops spat: Orissa HC orders Crime Branch probe

Cuttack: The Orissa High Court (HC) today ordered a Crime Branch probe into the ongoing tussle between police personnel and lawyers that had begun with the attack on a lawyer here on August 28.

Sources said a DSP-rank officer will investigate the incident. The next hearing of the case will be held on Monday.

The move came a few days after two petitions were filed in the court by Cuttack Bar Association and Nationalist Lawyers Forum in connection with the incident. Trough the petitions, the two bodies demanded a judicial probe by a sitting HC judge and arrest of the errant police officials.

Earlier on August 30, two days after the lawyer was attacked by cops near Nua Bazaar bridge here, Cuttack DCP Akhileswar Singh suspended Constables BK Samal and UK Bhuyan and Havildar PK Behera for the police excesses.

Meanwhile, the agitating lawyers continue to stage cease-work stir and will take decision on their next course of action on Wednesday.
