Lion ‘Pichhan’ dies at Nandankan Zoo

Bhubaneswar:  A male lion aged 21 years died at Nandankanan Zoo on the city outskirts here today.

Sources said the lion named ‘Pichhan’, which was brought from Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden in Gujarat on March 23, 2013, died due to old age-related complications. It was undergoing treatment for its ailments since last couple of days.

After its death, the number of lions at the zoo has dropped to 9, including 5 female ones, sources added.

Earlier,  one out of the eight anacondas that were brought to Nandankanan Zoo from Madras Crocodile Bank Trust died on November 28.

Meanwhile, two new enclosures, one for wolf and another for exotic primates will be inaugurated tomorrow on the foundation day of Nandankanan Zoological Park. Tigress Renuka and her two melanistic cubs will be released for display to the public as well.
