Lioness ‘Bijili’ gives birth to cub at Nandankanan Zoo

Bhubaneswar: Lioness Bijili gave birth to a cub at Nandankanan Zoological Park on outskirts of Bhubaneswar.

The Asiatic lioness Bijili sired by male lion Samrat delivered one cub at 2.15 am on Friday after 110 days of pregnancy, informed the NZP officials.

This is the second time lioness Bijili gave birth at the zoo.

The 5-year-old Bijili had given birth to three cubs on July 21 last year. The first one was stillborn followed by two cubs (one male and one female). The lioness had another dead cub in her womb. After 36 hours, she delivered the stillborn cub. However, the lioness did not accept her two live cubs following which a male cub died after three days.

This time, Bijili has accepted the cub and feeding it. Both the mother and her baby are in good condition. They are under observation through CCTV, the official said.
