The animal was suffering from rheumatic fever for the past six months and was undergoing treatment at the hands of the veterinarian at the Zoological Park, said Nandankanan officials.

In the last four years, seven zebras have died at the zoo due to different reasons, said sources in the zoo.

“On New Year’s Day and the next few days, the zoo draws a large number of visitors. They will be disheartened with the lone zebra at the zoo missing,” said a local who has a shop near the zoo.

Zoo officials said that they will try to get a zebra from some other zoo in exchange of some animals from Nandankanan.

Several animals have died at the Nandankanan Zoological Park in 2014 despite proper care and keep of the animals here, said a local.

Old age, disease, infections and adaptation are some causes of deaths of animals kept in captivity, said a zoo official.
