Love, Sex Aur Dhoka: Odisha woman attempts suicide as youth threatens to make intimate pics viral

Sambalpur: Betrayed in love, a woman of Odisha’s Sambalpur district attempted to end her life yesterday after her husband from Chhattisgarh threatened to make her intimate pictures viral on social media if she lodges police complaint against him.

However, she has been admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for treatment.

As per reports, the woman met a 23-year-old Jitesh of Dumerpali in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh when she had gone there to visit her maternal uncle’s family. He managed to convince her to marry him saying that he works as a secretary in Panchayat office. On June 26 last year, they got married in a temple in Mudipada area on Sambalpur district and stayed in a rented house there for a while due to COVID-19 induced lockdown. Later, Jitesh took her to his hometown in  Chhattisgarh.

Things changed when the woman reached her in-laws house as her mother-in-law asked her to bring Rs 3 lakh cash as dowry. On the other hand, Jitesh’s uncle gave her a proposal to work in a Jatra troupe. When she did not agree, he threatened her not to let her stay with Jitesh. Later on, the family allegedly started torturing her both mentally and physically.

On January 23, the couple had come to Sambalpur to attend a marriage function. On January 26 evening, Jitesh ran away from Mudipada after taking her mobile phone, an ATM card and gold jewellery, including a chain and a pair of earring. Later, the woman lodged a complaint at Mahila police station under Sections 498 (A), 294 and 506 of IPC and Section-4 of DP Act. As no action was taken by  the cops, the victim again went to Raigarh to lodge police complaint in this connection but  in vain.

After getting to know about the police complaint, Jitesh sent intimate pictures of the victim with him and threatened to make it viral if they go to police again. Failing to get justice, the ‘harassed’ woman attempted to end her life by consuming phenyl at around 10 AM yesterday. She was later rushed to hospital.

When contacted, the Mahila police said since the accused belongs to Chhattisgarh, process has been initiated to send a police team to there.
