Low pressure over Bay to intensify into Depression; Red warning issued for Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area formed over northeast and adjoining areas of eastcentral Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh and Myanmar coasts today morning is likely to intensify into Depression tomorrow.

According to IMD, the low pressure over northeast and adjoining areas of east-central Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh and Myanmar coasts persists over the same region. It is likely to move northwestwards and become well marked low pressure area during next 06
hours. Continuing to move northwestwards, it is likely to concentrate into a Depression by tomorrow (Aug 19) morning over North Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts.

Thereafter, it is likely to move west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal, North Odisha, Jharkhand and North Chhattisgarh, as per a special weather bulletin by the regional meteorological centre of IMD.

Under influence of the above system, Odisha may receive intense spell of rain till August 21 starting from today.

The MeT issued red, orange and yellow warnings for several districts.

Aug 18-19

(Yellow warning): Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Puri.

Aug 19-20

(Red warning): Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls (>20cm) very likely to occur over the districts of Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

(Orange warning): Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Bolangir, Jajpur, Balasore, and Bhadrak.

(Yellow warning): Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha and Puri.

Aug 20-21

(Orange warning): Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur and Balangir.

(Yellow warning): Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Angul, Boudh, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Nabarangpur and Dhenkanal.

The IMD predicted that squally surface wind speed reaching 40 to 50 kmph gusting 60kmph is very likely over Northeast Bay of Bengal today and squally wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph very likely over along and off Odisha coast and North Bay of Bengal during 19th to 20th August, 2022.

The fishermen are advised not to venture into deep sea are of North-East Bay of Bengal today, 18th August, 2022 and into sea along and off Odisha coast and North central Bay of Bengal during 19th to 20th August, 2022. Whoever in deep sea area are advised to return to coast by today.
