Low pressure turns depression; heavy rain likely in coastal, interior Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The low pressure area over Bay of Bengal has turned into a depression and is likely to trigger heavy rainfall over interior and coastal Odisha during the next 24 hours, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre said today.

“Yesterday’s well marked low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal & adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal & coastal areas of Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh concentrated into a depression over northwest & adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and coastal areas of Odisha. The system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross Odisha coast between Gopalpur and Puri by tonight,” a bulletin of the meteorological centre said.

Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places over the districts of interior Odisha and heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over districts of coastal Odisha likely to occur during next 24 hours, it said.

Local Cautionary Signal Number Three (LC-III) was kept hoisted at all ports in Odisha.

Strong gusty surface wind from northeasterly direction in north Odisha coast and northwesterly direction in south Odisha Coast with speed reaching 45-55 KMPH gusting to 65 KMPH likely to prevail along and off Odisha coast.

Sea condition would be rough to very rough for which fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea.
