Maha Shivaratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Falgun.

Observers of Maha Shivaratri vrat resort to fasting on this day and take food next day. They can only consume fruits and milk during the fast.

Devotees take second bath in the evening before doing Shiva Puja or visiting temple.

The puja should be done during night and devotees should break the fast next day after taking bath.

Shivaratri puja can be performed once or four times during the night. The whole night duration is divided into four prahars.

It is advised to practice meditation on this day and chant ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ as many times as possible during the whole day.
