‘Maha Shivratri’: Know timing and other details of ‘Mahadeep’ at Lingaraj Temple

Bhubaneswar: On the occasion of ‘Maha Shivratri’ on March 1, the ‘Mahadeep’ will be lifted atop the Shri Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar at 10 PM. A decision was taken in this regard at a meeting of the coordination committee for the ‘Maha Shivratri’ festival.

Informing the media persons about the committee’s decision, Khordha Collector Sangram Keshari Mohapatra, who was present at the meeting, said devotees will be allowed to light earthen diyas on the premises of the temple on ‘Maha Shivratri’. He added the devotees will have to adhere to the Covid guidelines while lighting the diyas.

Mohapatra further said devotees will not be allowed to pay obeisance to Lord Lingaraj at the sanctum santorum of the temple. They can have darshan near the Adakatha, added the Khordha Collector.
‘Maha Shivratri’ is celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Falgun.

During this auspicious day devotees observe fast and take food next day. They can consume fruits and milk during the fast.

Devotees take second bath in the evening before performing the puja of Lord Shiva. The puja should be done during night and devotees should break the fast next day after taking bath.
