Major theft at Utkal University: Ornaments, cash worth over Rs 12 lakh stolen from staff quarters

Bhubaneswar: Unidentified miscreants allegedly stole ornaments, cash and other valuables worth lakhs from a staff quarters on the campus of Utkal University in Odisha capital here yesterday.

The miscreants stole gold and silver ornaments worth around Rs 10 lakh, Rs 2 lakh in cash, a laptop and a camera from the quarters of Manoranjan Jena, sources said.

The miscreants have stolen the valuables by breaking open the door of Jena’s quarters while the family was away from their home yesterday evening, sources added.

“We went outside for around two hours yesterday evening. We returned home at around 7.40 pm and found that the front door of our quarters was damaged and electricity connection was snapped. Later, we found that ornaments, cash and other valuables were stolen from the quarters. The miscreants broke open our almirah to steal the ornaments and cash,” said Jena.

The miscreants even took away a piggy bank of Jena’s minor daughter. But, they had left a leather bag at the spot, sources said.

On being informed, the Saheed Nagar police launched a probe into the incident. A sniffer dog was pressed into service to get clues regarding the thieves.
