Male under-trial prisoner slits genitals in Odisha jail, hospitalised

Bhubaneswar: An under-trial prisoner (UTP) has been hospitalised after he slit his genitals and wrist inside a jail in Odisha’s Bhadrak district today.

The injured UTP has been identified as Sushant Majhi of Tihidi area in Bhadrak.

Majhi was arrested by Tihidi police on September 24 on charges of meting out physical as well as mental torture to his wife. Since then, Majhi has been lodged in Bhadrak Special Sub-Jail.

Majhi reportedly slit his genitals and wrist with a sharp object in a toilet of the jail at around 1 pm today afternoon.

Employees of the jail rescued Majhi and rushed him to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). Later, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after his condition deteriorated, sources said.

However, the jail authorities are yet to give any information regarding the sharp object used by the under-trial prisoner to slit his genitals and wrist.

“The prisoner slit his genitals and wrist in a toilet of the jail at around 1 pm. However, we have no idea regarding the sharp object used by the prisoner to do this,” said Bhadrak Special Sub-Jail Superintendent Rushinath Nayak.
