Mamita Meher murder case: Family demands death sentence for accused

Balangir: Deceased schoolteacher Mamita Meher’s family demanded death sentence for Govind Sahu, the prime accused in the sensational murder case.

During visit of a team of Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) to Mamita’s residence at Jharni village in Balangir district, her father demanded death sentence for the main accused.

“As Mamita was the sole breadwinner in the family, my son should be given a government job,” said Mamita’s father after meeting with OSCW Chairperson Minati Behera today.

A four-member team of OSCW including Chairperson Minati Behera visited Mamita Meher’s residence at Jharni village under Tureikela Block in Balangir district. They discussed with the family members and assured justice for them. They also assured them to take stringent action against the accused person.

The OSCW chief said that the chargesheet will be filed soon and the murder case will be fast-tracked.

Later, the team left for Mahaling in Kalahandi district where Mamita’s body was found buried underground at an under construction stadium near the Sunshine Public School.

The team will submit a report of Mamita Meher murder case to the State Government after inspecting the crime scene at Mahaling.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Women Commission had sought a detailed report of the case from the Kalahandi SP within 15 days.

Mamita Sahu, 24, from Balangir district was working as the teacher at Sunshine Public School in Mahaling. Since Oct 8, she was missing and her body was found dumped at an under construction stadium near the school on Oct 19.

Govind Sahu, the President of the school, had earlier escaped from police custody. Later, he was nabbed from his sister’s house ay Budhipadar village in Balangir district. During interrogation, he confessed to have committed the crime and revealed as to how he killed the woman schoolteacher on Oct 8.

During the course of investigation, Balangir Police arrested three others including Govind Sahu’s driver Radheshyam Chandi alias Radhe, who allegedly helped the former bury Mamita’s body at the under construction stadium.
