Police arrested the accused in the rape of a minor girl from Dandadhar under Kankadahada block in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district late on Monday night.
Acting on a tip off, Dhenkanal Town police raided the residence of accused Ranjan Sahu’s relative and arrested him late last night. Sahu is accused of raping a minor from Bhagabanpur village in the district on Saturday who committed suicide the following day fearing humiliation.
Sahu will be produced before the local court today, police sources said.
While Mahila Congress activists and the family members of the victim staged road blockade at Bajichowk square in Dhenkanal town yesterday demanding immediate arrest of the accused, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists along with the kin of the deceased blocked College by-pass road today demanding Rs 10 lakh compensation to the victim’s family.
On Sunday, the victim, a class IX student, doused herself with kerosene before setting herself on fire. The minor was raped by her neighbour Ranjan Sahu while she had gone out of her house to attend nature’s call in the wee hours. Following this, an FIR was lodged with Town police station
When the accused was grilled, he reportedly confessed to have committed the crime and apologised to the family members of the girl. The girl’s family and the accused’s family then signed a compromise note and submitted it at the Town police station.
The victim is learnt to have told her sisters that she was hurt and humiliated as a compromise deal was struck with her tormentor. Fearing public shame and ignominy, the victim allegedly committed suicide on Sunday.
