Man burns wife to death on Women’s Day in Cuttack

Cuttack: While entire world was celebrating International Women’s Day yesterday, a woman paid a big price for her daughter’s love marriage as she was burnt to death by husband on the special occasion.

The incident was reported from Kharigar village under Niali police limits in Cuttack district. The deceased has been identified as Kabita Das (48).

According to complaint, Jyotiranjan Das of the village locked her wife Kabita inside a room of the house at around 9.00 am on Sunday and set her afire by pouring kerosene on her body. The neighbours called the locals after they found smoke that was coming of the house. After they opened the door, found the woman was burning in the room.

The victim was immediately rushed to the Community Health Centre, Niali, for treatment. As her condition was critical, she was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, where she succumbed to burn injuries.

Following the incident, Kabita’s brother lodged a written complaint against Jyotiranjan Das. He alleged that his brother-in-law burnt his sister to death. In the complaint, it is also mentioned that the couple’s daughter was in love with a youth and she had a registered marriage in court a week ago. Suspecting his wife’s hand behind the incident, Jyotiranjan was torturing her physically and mentally.

Based on the complaint, the Niali police registered a case and initiated probe into the incident.

However, the accused husband is still at large, informed IIC Bijay Kumar Mallick.
