Man held for extorting people in disguise of Income Tax Officer

Bhubaneswar: After arresting a person for extorting people by impersonating himself as Income Tax Assistant Commissioner,  the Kharvelnagar police today produced the accused before the court.

As per the complaint lodged by one Debasish Patnaik, accused Umakanta Rout (59) posed himself as Income Tax officer and demanded Rs 10,000 from him to stop raid on his firm. Umakanta further threatened Debasish of dire consequences if he does not comply to his demand.

On receiving the complaint, police swung into action and arrested the accused yesterday.  A case under Sections 294, 506, 507, 419 and 387 of IPC was registered against him at Kharvelnagar police station.

The accused was involved in similar cases at several places in the Twin City earlier and arrested four times, informed police sources.
