A young woman and a man who were allegedly in an illicit relationship committed suicide today in Odisha’s district headquarters town of Angul by consuming pesticide.

The two were sighted in an unconscious state by locals at the Gopabandhu Park here. On being informed by locals Fire Brigade personnel rescued them from the park and admitted them at the district headquarters hospital.

While the woman succumbed to the effect of the poison at the district headquarters hospital, the man whose condition was critical died while being shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack.

The deceased woman has been identified as Kamini Sahu of Ugi village under Jarapada police station limits and the deceased man has been identified as Ramakanta Dehury of Jagannathpur under Purunakot police station limits.

Both were in an illicit relationship alleged deceased Kamini’s sister- Kuni Dehury, wife of Ramakanta.

“He (Ramakanta) used to work as a helper in a truck in Talcher. He had a relationship with Kamini for over a year. They used to regularly remain in touch over the phone. He used to shout at me whenever I objected to it. Three days back they had come to Angul and were staying in a guest house. I accompanied by my father, mother and mother-in-law had gone to meet them. Despite our persuasion, Kamini was insistent on staying with him. Today in the morning I got the news of their suicides,” said Kuni.

“I and Kamini had gone to the park for a stroll. There we had an altercation following which both of us consumed pesticide,” Ramakanta has said in his statement while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
