Manipuri youth mistaken for protester, beaten up by police

New Delhi, Aug 1:

A 22-year-old Manipuri youth was beaten up by two policemen here, leaving him with broken fingers in his right hand. Police Friday termed it a case of mistaken identity and apologised for the incident.

The incident took place around 11.30 p.m. Thursday in Gandhi Vihar area of north Delhi where security has been tightened because of the ongoing protests for scrapping of the aptitude test in the civil service examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission.

W. Sankhil, a former Delhi University student, was returning home from his friend’s house when the two policemen caught him and beat him up.

Senior police officers claim it was a case of mistaken identity as the policemen thought Sankhil was part of the protest.

Sankhil’s cousin Thomson, however, claimed that his brother was not among the protestors and was attacked while returning home.

Sankhil belongs to Manipur’s Chandel district.

His friends and relatives said he had broken fingers in his right hand and underwent treatment at Sant Parmanand Hospital in Civil Lines.

On Friday, the victim’s kin visited the local police station and demanded the registration of FIR against the policemen involved. However, they took back the complaint after the senior official of the police station apologised for the incident.
