The full moon day in the auspicious month of Margashirsha of the Hindu calendar is celebrated as Margashirsha Purnima.

Hindu devotees worship the Moon God on this day.

On this day, devotees perform ritualistic bath in the sacred rivers and worship Lord Vishnu.

Margashirsha Purnima 2021 Date: December 19, Sunday.

Purnima Tithi Begins: December 18, 2021 7:24 AM.

Purnima Tithi Ends: December 19, 2021 10:05 AM.

Rituals:

Devotees wake up early in the morning and take ritualistic bath with the roots of Tulsi plant.

It is advised to chant ‘Om Namo Narayana’ or the Gayatri mantra during the bath.

Devotees also keep a fast on this day. They refrain from eating or drinking anything.

The vrat observer spend time in bhajans and kirtans

Devotees worship Lord Vishnu and perform ‘yagya’ or ‘havan’ at home. Special Prasad is prepared and distributed among all the other devotees after ‘aarti’.

Charities and donations on Margashirsha Purnima are considered to be beneficial for devotees.

Donations can be in the form of money, clothes or food.

There is also a ritual of giving new clothes to daughters and other women in the family.

Significance:

It is believed that donation and charitable activities on Margashirsha Purnima relieves devotees from sins. Also, fasting on the day of Margashirsha Purnima results in fulfilment of all desires or wishes.
