Earlier in the day, the Odisha Assembly witnessed a heated debate and the government received flak over MCI withdrawing its sanction for an additional 100 MBBS seats in the academic year 2013-14.

Members cutting across party lines expressed concern over the issue. Minister Health and Family Welfare Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak informed the House that out of the 17 conditions laid down by MCI, the government had fulfilled 14 while promising to fulfill the other three conditions like a state of the art auditorium, lecture theatre and central library within six months.

The first phase counseling for admissions to undergraduate medical and dental courses in the state was over on July 3 with the final phase counseling scheduled for September 30.
