MCL mishap: Another body recovered in Odisha

Angul: Another body was recovered after 14 days of the coal mine mishap in Odisha’s Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) here today.

The identity of the body is yet to be ascertained.

Earlier, bodies of four missing persons engaged at Bharatpur Open Cast Project (OCP) were recovered.

At least nine persons were injured following a strata collapse at the Bharatpur mines in the Talcher Coalfields of state-run Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) on July 23 night.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.

Meanwhile, coal mining and despatch operations continued to remain paralysed at the Talcher Coalfields of MCL for the 13th consecutive day on Monday. MCL’s coal value loss stands at Rs 213.60 crore.

The agitation by the locals following the Bharatpur coal mine mishap has also impacted power generation as power producers are facing coal shortage.

“The company has incurred cumulative operational losses of up to 21.04 lakh tonne of coal, 24.20 lakh tonne of despatch and 20.54 lakh cubic metre of over burden removal while its coal value loss stands at Rs 213.60 crore,” said MCL in a statement on Sunday.
