Medical student drowns to death in Devkund waterfall of Mayurbhanj

Udala: A youth met watery grave today while taking a bath in Devkund waterfall under Udala police limits of Mayurbhanj. The deceased has been identified as Lipan Sahoo, who was a third-year student of Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital (PRMMCH) in the district.

Lipan belonged to Golanthara locality under Rangeilunda tehsil in Berhampur of Ganjam.

A source said that seven friends including Lipan had come to the tourist site to pass their time. Lipan slipped deep into the water due to the current leading to his untimely death.

Six friends of Lipan strived a lot to save him but to no avail. Later, he was rescued by some locals and immediately admitted to a nearby health facility for treatment. However, doctors at the government-run hospital declared him ‘brought dead’.

On being informed, Udala police reached the hospital and seized Lipan’s body and launched a probe. The body was sent to hospital for post-mortem. An unnatural death case has been registered.

“We were standing in knee-dip water and taking bath in the waterfall. Unfortunately, Lipan slipped into the water and drowned,” a friend of the deceased Satyaprakash Panda said.
