MEMU passenger train derails in Odisha’s Sambalpur; no casualties reported

Sambalpur: A mainline electric multiple unit (MEMU) passenger train which was on its way from Jharsuguda to Sambalpur derailed today evening near Sarala after hitting a stray cow in Sambalpur district. However, no casualties have been reported in the incident so far.

According to an official source, while travelling on the Sarla-Sambalpur section, due to a cattle suddenly entering the track and hitting the train, four wheels of a coach of 08169 Jharsuguda-Sambalpur MEMU passenger special train got off the track at around 6.25 pm.

A trolley of the fourth coach from the front loco got off track following the cattle run over.

A line got blocked in the incident. “No injury or casualties were reported and the estimated time of restoration is two hours,” a railway official expressed.

Meanwhile, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Sambalpur and his Team have reached the spot, and restoration work is underway. Accident Relief Train consisting of relief materials for track restoration has also reached the spot along with medical equipment.

Track fit was given at 8.35 pm with a caution speed of 30kmph for train movement.
