MeT hints arrival of monsoon in Odisha in June first week

Those reeling under scorching heat wave in Odisha might get permanent respite soon as the local meteorological centre today hinted an early arrival of monsoon in the state.

“Conditions are favourable for onset of monsoon in Odisha. There are chances of arrival of monsoon in the state earlier than the predicted date. The quantity of rain might increase by the first week of June,” said Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre Director Sarat Chandra Sahu.

However, heat wave conditions would prevail in Odisha till the end of this month, Sahu said.

Meanwhile, the meteorological centre today predicted thundersquall in several districts of Odisha within the next 24 hours.

“Thundersquall accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph likely to occur at one or two places over Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Jharsuguda, Sundergarh, Deogarh, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi & heat wave condition likely to prevail at one or two places over Balangir, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Sambalpur, Khurda, Angul, Cuttack and Bhadrak,” a release of the meteorological centre said.

Strong and gusty surface wind speed reaching 35 to 45 kmph likely to prevail along and off Odisha coast for which fishermen have been advised to be cautious while venturing into sea.
