Mid-day meal horror: Students in Odisha school hospitalised

In yet another case of mid-day meal horror,  students of a school in Sanakhemundi block of Odisha’s Ganjam district fell ill after having their lunch in the school on Wednesday, police said.

While ten students are still undergoing treatment at the local hospital, others have been discharged after improvement in their condition, according to the local BDO.

“Condition of those undergoing treatment are good and most of the students were discharged after treatment,” said Block Development Officer, Sanakhemundi, Abhimanyu Majhi.

According to the headmaster of the Nodal Primary School and Kasturba Gandhi Abasika Balika Vidyalaya at Adapada Surendra Bisoi, some students in the school fell ill after they consumed rice and egg curry prepared by a local self help group (SHG) .

Bisoi said some students felt uneasy and started vomiting while others complained of pain in the stomach after having their lunch.

All were treated at the hospital and only 10 students are presently undergoing treatment,”  the headmastersaid.

The doctors treating the students suspect it was case of food poisoning, he said.

Education officers have been advised to shift sick students to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, if any student’s condition deteriorates, said the District project officer, Sarva Shikshya Abhiyan (SSA) Sudam Mandal.
