Minor boys drown in Devi River: Third body fished out

Balikuda: Body of third minor boy, who had drowned in Devi River at Balikuda area in Jagatsinghpur district yesterday, was recovered by fire services personnel today morning.

The deceased boy has been identified as Subham Patra (16), hailed from Bhubaneswar.

The minor boy along with two other friends had drowned while taking bath in Devi River near Machagaon under Balikuda police limits on Monday. Yesterday, two bodies were recovered by evening. The search was underway to trace third body in the river.

According to reports, four boys had gone to Devi River for shower at around 10 am on Monday, of which three swept away in the strong water current. While the fire services personnel managed to recover two bodies by yesterday evening, one was still missing.

The two boys were Satyajit Barik (16 years old) of Ambashala village and Swabhiman Barik (16 years old) of Chandrapada village. The third boy was a son of Kuna Patra in Bhubaneswar and a Class 9 student.

Sources said that the locals had prevented the minor boys from entering into the river. Without paying any heed to their advice, three students went into the river and the fourth friend Tapan Martha started recording the scene on his mobile phone. After a while, the trio drowned in the river one after another. The fourth one, who was shooting through his phone, called for assistance from locals to save his friends.

However, the local youth could not see anyone in the water after they reached the incident site.

Balikuda police with help of fire services personnel rescued Satyajit following long hours of search operation in the river. They took him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. After some time, the rescue team fished out the second body from the water.
