Cuttack: A 16-year-old girl sustained grievous injuries after a decades-old iron bridge collapsed today at Kesarpur of Cuttack City in this district.

The identity of the minor girl has not been ascertained yet. However, she belongs to the same locality.

Despite being informed, neither the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) authorities, which is looking after its maintenance, nor the local administration reached the spot on time to carry out a rescue operation for long hours, some local residents alleged.

Locals tried to rescue the minor girl but failed. A vehicle-mounted crane was later pressed into service. The injured girl was rescued in critical condition after striving for around 45 minutes and after the iron pipes were uprooted. Following the rescue, the girl was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack for treatment.

“A mishap occurred due to the apathetic attitude of the local administration,” the locals rued.
